POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced, results-driven Emergency Department Nurse Manager to oversee night-shift operations for a high-volume, 40-bed Level II Trauma Center. In this key leadership role, you will direct daily shift operations, lead a dedicated team of night-shift nursing staff, and foster a patient-centered care environment.

Working closely with the Director of Emergency Services, you will play a crucial role in maintaining high clinical standards, managing throughput during peak volume, driving recruitment and retention, and promoting staff engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operational Management: Direct overall night-shift operations, patient care workflows, and staffing allocation across the 40-bed ED, dedicated trauma rooms, and behavioral health holding areas.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Directly manage and mentor night-shift nursing and support staff (sharing oversight of a ~100 FTE department with the Day Manager), including scheduling, engagement, and performance evaluations.
  • Talent Acquisition & Retention: Proactively manage staffing levels by conducting interviews, making strategic hiring decisions, and executing retention initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clinical Quality & Accountability: Monitor and evaluate nursing care to ensure compliance with established evidence-based protocols, patient safety initiatives, and facility clinical goals.
  • Culture & Engagement: Build a supportive, highly engaged team culture focused on staff satisfaction, professional development, and resilient leadership during volume surges.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Experience

  • Management Experience: 2–3 years of recent acute care Emergency Room management or supervisory experience required (Charge Nurse experience alone does not qualify).
  • Clinical Leadership: Demonstrated track record in managing ED staffing challenges, conducting efficient interviewing/hiring workflows, and maintaining operational throughput.

Education & Licensure

  • Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma required (Bachelor of Science in Nursing - BSN preferred).
  • Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice, or an active Compact/Multistate RN license.

Certifications (Must be obtained within specified timeframes post-hire if not currently held)

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) — Within 30 days
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) — Within 90 days
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) — Within 90 days
  • CPI / De-escalation (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) — Within 90 days
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) — Within 6 months
